The scene when C3P0 and R2D2 were lost in the sand dunes of Tatooine was filmed where the kids, striking lightsaber poses, are standing in the picture above!
Death Valley evokes the extraterrestrial. It’s easy to see why several scenes from Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope were filmed here. The copper-colored mountains surrounding Zabriskie Pointe could be on Mars. The salt pillars in the Devil’s Golf Course on Venus. Badwater Basin could be the surface of the Moon. Much of the landscape seemed alien. Barren. But not colorless—Artist’s Palate, which also starred in Star Wars, was neapolitan, with shades of chocolate, strawberry, vanilla, and mint—nor lifeless—despite being the lowest, driest, and hottest desert on Earth. I figure that if life can not only survive but thrive here, then it can beyond our planet.
