I nearly decapitated this sucker paddle-boarding in Oceanside’s harbor this afternoon — and when I say nearly decapitated, I mean lightly brushed. I had been ogling a harbor seal lounging on the stern swim platform of, what appeared to be, an expensive yacht, while simultaneously questioning what yacht owner would permit a seal on its stern, when I paddle-boarded over a Western Grebe. The Grebe was unaffected by my paddle parting of the sea, a consequence of being donated fish scraps by local fisherman. The seal was also unaffected, barely open its nictitating membrane to glance at me. I, however and in contrast, was affected, nearly toppling into the harbor.
